Doctorates
There are various routes to a doctorate at IMMS. There is currently comprehensive and professional academic and specialist supervision and funding with a full focus on the doctoral project in a graduate programme and in an internal research group.
The internal research group “Application of AI-based virtual sensor technology to effectively increase the precision of positioning systems – VirtuSen” is working on quantifying the effect of environmental interference, such as temperature and humidity fluctuations, on high-precision positioning and measuring systems and reducing their impact on positioning accuracy. Support is provided by the teams from the Mechatronics and System Design departments.
In the DFG-funded NanoFab Research Training Group 2182 “Tip-based and laser-based three-dimensional nanofabrication techniques applied to large (macroscopic) areas”, the research work is being supervised by professors and research staff from Technische Universität Ilmenau and IMMS under the direction of the Institute of Process Measurement and Sensor Technology in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. IMMS is researching solutions for a highly dynamic drive system for the multi-axis manufacturing and processing of objects with nanometre precision. NanoFab has so far resulted in one doctorate at IMMS on a vertical drive for 3D nanomanufacturing, and two more are currently in progress.
In addition, doctoral theses have been completed or are in progress on topics that are linked to our ongoing research projects and mutually enrich theory and practice. As a rule, the doctoral topics are therefore aimed at application-oriented research, which IMMS conducts as a transfer institute. Examples include solutions for precise passive RFID sensor technology or new methods for automation in the design of integrated circuits, a CMOS biochip system for optical detection and quantification of analytes or advanced modelling methods for AMS systems in ultra-low-power applications.
In addition to working at IMMS, it is also possible to work on your own doctoral projects, for which individual time corridors can be agreed.
