As long as a topic is online, you can apply for it. Usually we will tailor the topic to you (e.g. duration of your internship, period of study, skills, interests, etc.).
Unfortunately, voluntary internships are not possible at IMMS. We supervise mandatory internships according to the study regulations of your degree programme as well as final theses.
If your interests and skills match the tasks and requirements of our current research and development projects and you can work on site in Ilmenau or Erfurt alongside your studies, it is possible to work as a student assistant.
In most cases, you and we can best assess this after you have been supervised by us during your mandatory internship and/or your Bachelor's thesis.
A mandatory internship with us is priceless – you gain a lot of valuable practical experience and science-based methodological knowledge, which we impart to you. We will help you familiarise yourself with some of our extensive technical equipment to industrial standards. We provide you with individual support and want to give you the best possible assistance to prepare you for a career start in industry or at a research institute. You can find out more at: www.imms.de/career-youtube
This is all part of our commitment to promoting young talent, which we have made our mission as a non-profit, state-owned research and transfer institute and in which we invest a great deal of time.
Therefore, mandatory internships are not primarily intended as a labour pool and you will not receive any remuneration. Instead, we support you with an allowance towards living costs, which can help to compensate for relocation, for example.
The duration and timing of a mandatory internship depends on your examination regulations and, if not specified there, is usually designed by us at 40 hours per week.
For student assistantships, an individualised scope is agreed in the contract that matches the scope of your studies. The maximum possible working time is 40 hours per month.
In Ilmenau or Erfurt, it depends on the topic. Please note the sites of the institute on the TU Ilmenau campus and in Erfurt near the tram stop "Windischholzhausen/X-FAB". You can find more information at: Sites.
Remote work is possible only rarely and for a few selected topics. For most tasks, you will have to deal with a lot of hardware and test equipment, which we can only provide in Ilmenau or Erfurt.
In general (also for programming topics), we prefer to have you in our team to ensure you receive the best possible individual support. Together we will explore new solutions with you and the devil is usually in the details. Short paths and group dynamics are the best way to make progress.
If you are attending lectures or a language course alongside your mandatory internship, we will work with you to arrange your attendance times accordingly.
You can only apply via our platform. All offers under www.imms.de/students lead to this platform as soon as you call up an entry.
Please only apply once – for your favourite topic or for the one that comes closest to your interests. This is the quickest way for us to process your application and get back to you. If you are interested in more than one topic, please include this in your cover letter.
In case our current suggestions are not suitable, please send us your speculative application for students with a topic you would like to work on.

Good supervision is also very important to us for student assistantships. That is why we prefer to invest the workload in your supervision rather than in the time-consuming administration of second jobs.
