Abstract: The general availability of wireless sensor networks (WSN) fosters the desire to expand their range of applications to domains hitherto dominated by wired solutions. One such scenario is that of autonomous in-ground sensor nodes for traffic monitoring applications communicating wirelessly. This work summarizes the challenges encountered in the development of such a system and the approaches employed.
