Monitoring biotic and abiotic factors in the observation of juvenile trees in forest ecosystems by a multimodal sensor system

Abstract:
This paper presents a sensor network consisting of an optical sensor box that captures colour photographs, spectral images and 3D data of observed juvenile trees in forest ecosystems to study growth behaviour, pest infestation, and feeding damage. It additionally records environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and soil moisture. The technical realisation of the multimodal sensor system is described, presenting examples of image and 3D data acquisition, coupled with the logging of environmental conditions. Possibilities and limitations of the current system are discussed as well as possible further developments for improved systems in the future.
