The Institut für Mikroelektronik- und Mechatronik-Systeme gemeinnützige GmbH (IMMS GmbH) was founded in 1995 as a state-owned out-of-university Institute of the Free-State of Thuringia. From at the beginning 25 staff members it has continuously grown to more than 80 employees and this by in parallel hiving off two companies – the EMSYS GmbH and the THESYCON GmbH. The attractive locations of the Institute and the modern laboratory equipment build the foundation. The places of activity are found on the campus of the technical university Ilmenau (TU Ilmenau), in the Ernst-Abbe-Centre for research and transfer and in the “microelectronics forge” Thuringia in Erfurt South-East. These locations have high investments in knowledge and competence in common – here people are working, who are creative and full of zest for action.
The relation to the TU Ilmenau is of strategic importance for the Institute. More than 30 students are annually integrated in research and development tasks of the IMMS. In addition the scientific employees of the Institute give lectures and hold seminaries at the faculties of the university. Already in 1998 the IMMS was the first AT-Institute (institute at the university”) of the TU Ilmenau.
For small and medium-sized companies of the most diverse trades the IMMS has become a suitable partner, with whom they can quickly and reliably close the gap between latest scientific knowledge and development of innovative products with a lasting effect. In the meantime the Institute has been working in annually up to 100 research and development projects, of which approx. 80 % are carried out by order of industrial companies and approx. 20 % in publicly sponsored association research projects.
